Myostatin is seen commonly in muscle tissue. It is the prime protein for contributing to restraining muscle growth, making sure that muscles do not grow too large. This protein is commonly studied in mice, cows, and other animals. There can be a rare condition caused by a mutation in the MSTN gene. This mutation is written as IVS1+5G>A.
This mutation can cause an overgrowth of muscle as well as abnormal hypertrophy. Due to this, the cells produce very little or practically zero amount of functional myostatin. A loss of this protein in muscle cells can cause an overgrowth of muscle tissue. It does not look like it may cause certain other medical problems in affected individuals. There are various other names for the MSTN genes and they are GDF-8, GDF8, GDF8_Human, or growth differentiation factor 8.
